This was the final "true" DKW for the enthusiast in terms of the body-style. The power was now 44 bhp at 4,500 rpm and a higher 50 bhp in the S version. The doors of the 1000 no longer opened "the wrong way". When the side windows were would down the look was of a fixed-head coupe. The S Version had a top speed of almost 87 mph (140 kph). The 1000 Sp clearly imitated the Ford Thunderbird and the engine produced 55 bhp. Only 1,640 convertibles were sold of the 1000 Sp, compared with 5,000 of the coupe.
