After World War II Hotchkiss struggled to get going again. There was little demand for big vehicles and in 1946 the factory sold 117 of the pre-war 686 model. These had a 3,485 cc six-cylinder engine with overhead valves that produced 100 bhp at 4,000 rpm. The 686 Grand Sport which appeared in 1947 even had 125 bhp at its disposal. Cars of this type won their first two Monte Carlo rallies in 1949 and 1950. Most Hotchkiss cars were equipped with a Cotal electro-magnetic automatic gearbox but a four-speed manual box could be fitted on request.
