Peugeot introduced their 404 in May 1960. Once again the body was designed by Paninfarina. Although the car appeared bigger than the 403 it was at 4,420 mm (174 in) actually 50 mm (2 in) shorter and also 60 mm 2 3/8 in) lower. A variety of engines were available for the car, from 1,468 - 1,816 cc, with the latter having petrol-injection. There were also two diesel engines.
The 404 was sold in great numbers.
Peugeots had built a reputation for fuel economy, the space in their cars, and good road-holding.
