A more powerful derivative of the Herald range arrived in 1963, the new Herald 12/50. Based on the successful Herald 1200 the 12/50 used a 51bhp version of the same 1147cc engine, hence the model designation: 12 (1200cc) with 50 (50bhp) = 12/50.
The Herald 12/50 came only as a saloon and was based on the Herald 1200 De-luxe specification. Extra standard features included front disc brakes, a folding sun-roof, extra interior trim padding and a new front grille. The Herald 12/50 remained in production until the more powerful 13/60 arrived in 1967.
