The engines were VW Type4 (411/412) 1.7 and 1.8 litres. 1.7 with carburator or fuel injection ( Bosch Djetronic). 1.8 with carburator only. The 2.0 litre engine was a Porsche design engine based on the VW 1.8 litre. It was also delivered with a 6 cylinder boxer engine, 2 litres 110 hp, of Porsche design and named VW/Porsche 914/6. This version was not the same as 916! The front suspension is basically Porsche 911, while the rear is VW type4 (411/412). Some parts were even used from the VW type 4s, because the 914 was ment to be less expensive than the 911 range. The 914 is extremely fun to drive, quick in the corners due to the weight displayment. It outruns the 911s of the time in corners and curvy roads.
The interior was basic. It means that the driver seat is very good but the passanger seat is a totally different story. The engine is just a few inches behind you and you can hear it. The exterior design is not of the very best, but altogether this makes it a very charming and amusing car.
In -75 this project ended and Porsche was engaged in the the 924 as a succesor to the 914. VW tried a cooperative with Fiat with the X1/9 but stopped this in a hurry. Then VW came back with the Scirocco with great succes. Both the 914 and the first generation Scirocco was build by Karman Coachworks.
