Lot 379: 1949 Allard M Type Drophead Coupe

The M Type Allard was introduced in 1947 from Sydney Allard's London premises and was met with an enthusiastic response. The M type drophead coupe was constructed around a box section steel chassis made by John Thompson. Suspension up front was by split "I" beam independent type with a live rear axle fitted with drum brakes. Power was provided by an 85 hp 3.6 litre V8 side valve Ford engine driving through a 3 speed manual gearbox. Allard has a unique motorsport history, having won in a variety of disciplines such as rallying, sports car racing and sprint/hill climbing. This particular M Type left the factory on the 21st March 1949 and has under gone some interesting modifications. Fitted in the early 1960's is a 5.3 litre overhead valve Ford V8 engine fitted with Mercury rocker cover and 4 barrel Holley carburettor. An Alvis Speed 25 synchromesh 4 speed gearbox was also fitted. DFX 826 has had 2 previous owners and is finished in dark blue with a maroon leather interior. Complete with V5 certificate, buff log books, assorted paperwork and old MoT certificates, this M type is eligible for the Mille Miglia retrospective and other classic events and represents a cheap and exciting way into classic motorsport.
