Engine: four-cylinder pushrod overhead valves, 1,292 cc, twin SU carburettors, 50bhp at 4,500 rpm; Gearbox: four-speed manual with synchromesh on top three ratios; Suspension: beam front, live rear axle, half elliptic leaf springs all round; Brakes: four-wheel hydraulically operated drum. Right hand drive.
With the announcement of the TA Midget series early in 1936, MG's popular little sporting model underwent something of a sea-change. The Abingdon factory's sales had dwindled from a 1932 peak of 2,400 cars sold, to half that number three years later. Something needed to be done and Morris, who were MG's parent company, decreed that a practical, slightly more roomy car that used as many components as possible from the Morris and Wolseley ranges was required. The overhead camshaft engine of the now superseded P-type was replaced by a flexibly mounted 1292cc pushrod overhead valve unit. The body too was four inches wider and each seat cushion was two-and-a-half inches broader. Comfort was catered for with slightly softer suspension. The TA Midget was a delight to handle, gear changes controlled though a crisp remote change and eased by synchromesh on top, third and second gears.
According to its continuation log book this MG TA came into the possession of Malcolm McGregor of Thorpe, Norwich on 6th September 1965, prior to which no other history is known save for the fact that it was first put on the road on the 14th April 1938 and originated in the Bournemouth area. The log book is stamped up to June 1967 with Norwich County Council but no further ownership changes are recorded. However, an MoT certificate attached to it confirms that by August 1970 the car had migrated to Rayleigh, and would by then or shortly after have passed to the Sharpe family.
Today, the car presents in slightly scruffy order having clearly been the subject of a repaint at some stage, but then stored and allowed to age. It is not known when the car was last run.
In addition to its continuation log book it has a more modern V5 registration document.
