Lot 242: 1970 Porsche 911 S FIA Rally Car

The 911 "S" was Porsche's top of the range sporting model throughout the late 1960's and early 1970's, a period when the purest and most desirable versions of the great 911 were produced. Initially available in 2 litre guise from July 1966, it boasted a higher fifth gear, anti-roll bars front and rear, Koni shock absorbers and ventilated disc brakes, later also receiving alloy front brake callipers.In 1969, all 911 models had their engine capacity increased to 2.2 litres whilst the final improvement came in 1971 when it was further raised to 2.4 litres. By now the 911 "S", featuring mechanical fuel injection, developed a healthy 190bhp (just 20bhp less than the legendary Carrera RS) giving it excellent performance: 0-60mph in just 6 seconds and a maximum of 145mph (1972 Car & Driver road test figures) were more than adequate to dispense with Ferrari Dinos! Naturally the 911 "S" found its way into competition and was successful in its class in all major events, including World Championship Rallies, Le Mans, the Targa Florio and Tour de France.This particular left hand drive "S" offered here was built in 1970 and was completely restored and converted to a rally car in 1996 by Francis Tuthill. With only 10 kilometres under its belt since a complete engine rebuild, the engine was fitted with new bearings, pistons and a mechanical fuel injection pump. The gearbox is a 915 box that is much stronger over the original. It is also fitted with 80% lock-diff. The "S" complies to international rally standards with a full roll cage, Sabelt race harnesses, Sparco bucket seats, race fuel cell, plumbed-in extinguisher and ignition cut-out switch. The car comes complete with appropriate FIA papers and has been maintained and prepared by specialists with 25 years experience. Further details include map lights and Cibie front spot lights. The car is finished in white with Fuch wheels and is described by the vendor to be in good condition. The car is on the button, drives very well, pulls hard in all gears and is in superb condition to rally immediately.
