Lot 049: 1937 NASH LAFAYETTE 400 BUSINESS COUPE

Van Dijk Collection, H&H Sales Limited (3 October 2005)

Finished in antique white with lichen green cloth upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example has been part of the collection since 1993. A five-window business coupe, its fabulous hunched-forward styling conceals a cavernous boot large enough to swallow most anything a salesman could throw at it (or even the salesman himself). Powered by a 234.8ci (3,850cc) straight-six mated to a three-speed synchromesh gearbox, its leaf-sprung suspension and hydraulic drum brakes were designed for long road trips across varying terrain rather than high-speed cornering. Equipped with opening front quarter-light windows, a passenger footwell mounted heater, 100mph speedometer and rear window blind, its functional cabin is somewhat at odds with the torpedo-shaped 'Riteway' headlights and razor-point taper rear wings.
