Lot 356: 1961 Velocette 349cc ‘Viper’
Introduced in 1956, the Venom and Viper sports roadsters were derived from the touring MSS which, since its re-appearance in 1954, had sported a swinging-arm frame and Hall Green’s own telescopic front fork. Development pursued as part of the scrambles programme resulted in increased engine power, the new 350cc Viper being marginally more powerful than the old 500. With a top speed of 90mph it was quicker too. Sold new by Ray Kempster Ltd, of East Sheen, this Velocette Viper bears a tax disc dated March ’75, presumably the last occasion it was licensed for the road. Offered for restoration, the machine comes with its original logbook and Department of Transport letter linking the registration mark ‘ETT 96’ to the machine.
