Lot 389: 1953 Matchless 497cc G80C Trials
“At the end of the rigid’s development with the ultra lightweight model announced in September 1953, those gleaming black machines with proud gold (AJS) or silver lining (Matchless) were the acme of the trials manufacturers’ art, and were almost an exact replica of the highly successful works machines.” – Don Morley, Classic British Trials Bikes, Osprey, 1984. In the capable hands of works riders Hugh Viney, Artie Ratcliffe and Gordon Jackson, AMC’s AJS and Matchless ‘heavyweight’ singles dominated Britain’s national trials scene in the early 1950s, and these easily managed and reliable models are much favoured in Pre-’65 events today. An example of the rarer 500cc trails model, this machine is presented in mostly original condition. It is offered with sales invoice recording the date of acquisition in 1988.
