Lot 450: 1982 Suzuki GS1600EZS ‘The Six’

Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (16 October 2005)

Talented engineers have been creating their own one-off, multi-cylinder machines by uniting two, three, four or more engines since motorcycling began, but there can have been few more professionally executed than world-famous drag racing maestro and Suzuki specialist Pip Higham’s outrageous ‘Six’, a mammoth project that consumed a staggering 1,500-plus hours.

The Six’s crankcase was fabricated by grafting on the outer ends of another set of cases; internal oil ways were sleeved, and the welding undertaken by Metmachex Engineering, after which the crankcase assembly was heat treated and machined. A wooden pattern (included in the sale) was created to cast the cylinder block, into which heavy-duty sleeves were fitted, bored and honed. (The sleeves are thick enough to increase the capacity from the current 1,600cc to 1,890cc - 78mm pistons are available). The crankshaft has been re-phased at 120 degrees and features two bespoke crank webs, machined and heat treated to the required specification, while all other parts are factory Suzuki. There are four camshafts, machined from forged billets and ground by recognised specialist Phil Joy, all four being individually adjustable for precise valve timing. The additional cylinder heads have four separate studs each, making 20 in all. The engine is 32” wide.

The six carburettors have one-off, hand made linkages and air box; the fuel tank has dual fuel taps and twin supply lines. Tony Law hand bent the outside exhaust pipes, which were then black-chromed to match the rest of the Katana-style system. The ignition system uses three dual-output coils and contact breakers, while the starter drive uses a special, low-ratio gear train. A new, oversize battery is fitted. The entire chassis was totally refurbished circa 1,000 miles ago, receiving a new seat, tyres, chain/sprockets, Dream Machine paintwork, etc. MoT’d/taxed until February 2006 and offered with Swansea V5, ‘The Six’ represents an opportunity to acquire a truly unique machine, hand made by one of drag racing’s greatest stars, that is a guaranteed head-turner in any company.
