Lot 457: 1921 Levis 211cc Popular

Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (16 October 2005)

One of the pioneers of the two-stroke motorcycle, Levis commenced manufacture of their 211cc, single-gear lightweight in 1911. Soon dubbed ‘Popular’, the model was a huge success for the Birmingham marque, remaining in production until 1926. This example was first registered ‘DO 1550’ in Lincolnshire on 14th August 1921. The original registration was taken off by the first owner and the machine acquired in 1978 by the vendor, who undertook its restoration during the 1980s. The frame and wheels were repainted and stoved at that time, the tank and mudguards re-cellulosed, the brightwork nickel plated, the wheels rebuilt and new tyres fitted. Examined at time of restoration, the engine was found not to need any work. The vendor advises us that the engine has not been running for some years, but has been kept oiled and is free, and that the transmission requires a new drive belt. Re-registered with the age-related mark ‘DS 7835’ in 1988, this charming vintage lightweight is offered with Swansea V5 registration document.
