Lot 473: 1993 Norton 500cc Manx Bernie Allen Replica
In the 1990s, accomplished Norton expert Bernie Allen produced replicas of late (1961-specification) Manx Nortons to order at a price that was then in the region of £24,000. Doug Hele, Norton’s renowned race engineer, said of the Allen bikes: “They are better than when we made them.”
The machine’s specification includes the following: Summerfield Engineering 86x95.6mm engine, five-speed PGT gearbox, frame constructed of Reynolds 531 tubing to original pattern, Amal GP2 carburettor, Akront alloy wheel rims laced to conical hubs, etc.
Purchased by the current owner at Brooks’ Olympia Sale in December 1997 (Lot 166), the machine has always been kept in a centrally heated room of his house. The engine has never been started. Bernie Allen knew that the machine was to be displayed and the engine has been suitably protected from new. Commissioning instructions for running the bike are included in the sale, together with specification sheets, valve timing details, etc.
