Lot 387: 1982 Lancia LC1

Auto Moto D'Epoca, Coys (19 November 2005)

When Group C endurance racing was introduced in 1982 it allowed existing two litre Group 6 cars to compete. Despite the fact that the Lancia LC1 had an engine of only 1.4 litres, and the Group C cars could could offer any capacity, Lancia very nearly won the Drivers Championship to add to the Constructors' title it had taken in 1981.The sight of the sleek aerodynamic Lancias doing battle with Porsches, Lolas, Aston Martins and the rest, will lomg be remembered by all who witnessed them. It was real David vs Goliath stuff, made the more dramatic by the fact that the Lancias were usually the only open cars in the field. While unable to compete in terms of sheer horsepower, the LC1 did have some distinct advantages. For a start it employed full, skirted ground effect whereas Group C cars were required to have a large 'flat bottom' area. Then there were the strict fuel limits which was to Lancias advantage. Finally there was the exceptionally strong driver line up: Michele Alboreto, Teo Fabi, Piercarlo Ghinzani, Riccardo Patrese, Corrado Fabi and Alessandro Nannini - every one a Formula One driver. In fact, there lies the clue to Lancias 1982 season; it was ineligible for the Constructors Championship because it was running Group 6 cars, and was therefore going for first sports car Drivers' World Championship while it prepared new Group C cars. This stratergy did not find favour with anyone, but the rules allowed for it and the result was brilliant racing. As the first year of a new catagory, sports car racing in 1982 was unusually rich and diverse, with entries from Porsche, Rondeau, Osella, Wm, Ford, Aston Martin, Lola, Sauber, Grid and with occasional forays by Mazda and Toyota. It was an unusually competitive year, but Lancia entered eight races, took threewins and three seconds and Patrese missed the Drivers' Championship by the narrowest of margins. In fact, the car he shared with Teo Fabi was overtaken on the lap of the Shell Oils 1000km at Brands Hatch and he lost the title to Jackie Ickx's Porsche by just 1.7 seconds.Although the Group C cars were handicapped by fuel consumption while racing, this did not affect qualifying, and despite having little more than half the engine capacity of the Porsches, the Lancias frequently took pole position and almost always the fastest lap in the race. The car we offer, which still wears its striking Martini livery, was raced at Monza by Ghinzani and Teo Fabi but retired after 104 laps with a damaged distributor. It won the Nurburgring driven by Patrese, Alboreto, Fabi and Rolf Stommelen, it retired after eight hours. Alessandro, Nannini and Corrado Fabi bought it home second at Mugello close behind Alboreto and Ghinzani's sister-car and six laps ahead of the leading Porsche in third place. It also set the fastest lap. We belive this car was in fact used in all three races. The Lancia 'pool' consisted of just three cars and the car we offer was usually driven by the driving team supporting Patreses championship - he drove it at the Nurburgring after his own had retired in order to score points. Finally there was the showdown at Brands Hatch running wet / dry conditions which was one of the closest and thrilling races in the history of endurance racing. The general consensus was that Ickx had driven a fantastic race and Lancia had been a worthy component. The LC1 has been a stop gap but a very successful one and Lancia had a group C model ready for 1983 so these extraordinary cars were raced no more.E' da considerare la regina dell'asta.
