Lot 234: 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 Replica

Goodwood Revival, Bonhams (1 September 2006)

This gorgeous Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 Replica is a San Hosé, California-built Mustang Fastback just like the originals that were shipped to Carol Shelby for transformation to GT350 specification. In 2005 this car was completely dismantled for restoration and painstaking transformation into a 1966 Shelby GT350 Replica. The basic body parts were painted separately in Wimbledon White before the car was assembled and the Le Mans stripes masked off. It was then taken apart and the stripes painted blue. The bodywork was then reassembled, watered, sanded and buffed to a superb finish. This was a long, drawn-out process but the end result more than justifies the effort expended. The original bonnet was replaced with a correct GT350 item and the two valances replaced with new ones, while the rest of the original body parts, including the wings, doors, quarters and boot lid were reused. The body underside was stripped to bare metal, then primed and painted semi-gloss black before new suspension was installed front and rear. Other new components fitted include the brakes, brake lines, tinted glass (including rear screen), door latches, rubber seals, chrome/stainless trim (including grille), Shelby filler cap and ‘GT350’ emblem, eternal/internal door handles and window winders. The engine has been extensively rebuilt and bored 0.030” over. It has solid lifters, matching cam and original Ford-type dual exhaust and mufflers giving the car the authentic and evocative GT350 sound. Beneath the bonnet, the engine bay detailing is 1966 showroom-fresh, while sitting in the driver’s seat one is confronted by a beautiful new black interior including Shelby dash-mounted tachometer. The transmission comprises a four-speed manual gearbox with new Competition/Plus shifter and a 9” rear end with newly rebuilt Posi-traction differential. Optional in 1966, the 3.50:1 final drive ratio provides an ideal balance between fast getaways and relaxed highway cruising. The car rolls on new Torq-thrust D wheels and BF Goodrich TA radial tyres. A no-expense-spared labour of love available at less than half the price of the real thing, this superb GT350 Replica is offered with restoration invoices, FIA papers and Swansea V5 document.
