Lot 449: 1962 MG Midget Competition Roadster

Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (9 September 2006)

‘The Spridget’s competition successes were rarely in the big arena. It was much more at home in the hands of private owners who ran it in every kind of event from production car trials to rallycross, and from club sprints to the 1,000 Kilometres at the Nurburgring.’ – Eric Dymock, The Sprites & Midgets. This MG Midget was professionally built for circuit racing in the early 1990s by MG specialists Octagon Workshop in the Isle of Man. Its specification includes a lightweight bodyshell; aluminium boot lid and doors; glassfibre bonnet and wings; Rose-jointed front suspension, Spax shock absorbers, tuned 1,275cc engine with Weber carburettor, close-ratio gearbox with low 2nd gear, competition seat and harness, plumbed-in fire extinguisher, bag fuel tank; fly-off handbrake; plus many other more minor modifications. This car has been competing in many Manx events including the Manx Classic on the Willaston circuit, Three Hills Challenge and at the Jurby circuit, winning races and gaining class awards. Representing an excellent introduction to low-cost motor sport, this well presented competition-prepared Midget is offered with assorted old scrutineering stickers and Swansea V5 registration document.
