Lot 220: 1989 Bentley Turbo R Long-Wheelbase Saloon

Rolls-Royce, Bentley & Select Pre-War Motor Cars, Bonhams (21 June 2008)

Introduced at Geneva in 1985, the Turbo R continued the modern ‘Blower Bentley’ theme, but with the added refinement of suspension better suited to the car’s increased performance. Bentley’s much-improved sports saloon was greeted with approval by Autocar magazine. ‘There was a time, not so long ago, when Bentley played a faint second fiddle to Rolls-Royce. That is no longer the case. Rolls-Royce’s management now recognises the value of the Bentley name and tradition and has developed the image - along with the sales - to take advantage. In a terribly upmarket way, Bentley is now the enthusiast, high performance partner, and never more so than in the turbo-charged Bentley R.’ Outwardly the R differed from the preceding Mulsanne Turbo by virtue of its cast-alloy wheels shod with low-profile Pirelli tyres, while inside there was a revised fascia with rev-counter included amongst the comprehensive instrumentation. In a break with Rolls-Royce tradition, power figures were made public, revealing that the engine produced a 320bhp and a staggering 475lb/ft of torque. Few cars were - or are - better suited to fast long-distance touring.
This long-wheelbase Turbo R has the Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection system introduced in 1987. Sold new on 1st January 1989, the car was delivered to its new home in Mayfair together with the invoice for £107,502.99 that included £5,000 for the finest, state-of-the-art stereo system specified by the owner and fitted at the Crewe factory. To accomplish the installation, Rolls Royce had to relocate several instruments and this was done by placing them above the rear view mirror. Finished in Cobalt Blue with grey hide interior, the car is equipped with picnic tables and comes with lambs’ wool over-rugs.
The first owner was chauffeur driven in the Bentley, which was fully maintained by H R Owen for some 11,000 miles, at which point it was sold to its second owner in 1999. H R Owen continued its maintenance while some additional work was carried out by Hoffmans of Henley. The current recorded mileage is 19,300, which is supported by a full and comprehensive history file containing every piece of relevant paperwork. A full service was carried out some 500 miles ago and new batteries and tyres fitted. Offered with MoT to May 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document, this no-expense-spared Turbo R is in excellent condition, drives superbly and will offer many years of service.
