Lot 232: Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

Autosport, Coys (10 January 2009)

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder was launched in 1962 and represented a return for the marque to the high class, luxury 6 cylinder cars which in the past had proved so successful. Its chief rivals were the Maserati 3500GT Spyder and Lancia Flaminia Convertible, both similar in appearance and performance. The Alfa's twin-cam engine developed a respectable 145 b.h.p. at an unstressed 5900 r.p.m., fed by three double-barrelled side-draught carburettors; the power was transmitted through a five-speed gearbox to give the car an impressive 125 m.p.h. top speed. The sophisticated mechanical specification was matched by a luxurious and well-appointed interior, making the car an ideal choice for long distance high speed open touring. HOK 986D was first registered in January 1966 and is recorded as having only two former keepers since that date. The car was delivered new to the showrooms of Alfa Romeo London on the 18th February 1965 and was converted to right-hand drive during this period. This procedure was popular with British Alfa Romeo 2600 owners during the Sixties, since only 104 original right-hand drive cars were ever produced by the factory, as opposed to the 2,000+ which were built in left-hand drive configuration. The previous keeper, Mr Neville Pearson, acquired the car in 2003, after which he began a loving three-year restoration process in the family's workshops, a photographic record of which is included with the car. Sadly, Mr Pearson passed away shortly after completing the restoration, hence its presence in this sale today. Finished in traditional Alfa Romeo red, the car is described as being in very sound mechanical condition, with its twin-cam engine mated to a five-speed gearbox. Cosmetically, the car's interior and exterior are described as being in fine order. An excellent opportunity to acquire one of these classic Alfa Romeos which has benefited from a sympathetic restoration, a must for any lover of the marque.
