Lot 20: Porsche 912

Fine Collectors' Cars, H&H Sales Limited (14 March 2009)

According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular left-hand drive Porsche has had approximately 20,000 spent on it since arriving in the UK during 1999 (with works done by `Carrera Performance' accounting for circa 12,000 alone). Beginning life as a 912, the car reportedly boasts "a very solid shell" and "RS-style front bumper with correct spoiler". The subject of a major refurbishment / upgrading programme within the last few years, its interior has been enhanced with later Carrera seats (complete with inertia reel seat belts), `RS' carpets and a Momo steering wheel. Further benefiting from new chromework and seals as well as replacement heater valves and channels, it can claim a correctly functioning heater (though, the sunroof is inoperative). The Porsche's weight without fuel has been estimated at 950kg. Mechanically, its original 912-type 1600cc four-cylinder engine has been replaced with a 911-type 2000cc six-cylinder unit which left the factory aboard a 911E model (or so its 901/09 type code would imply). Extensively overhauled, the air-cooled powerplant has been modified with `S' specification cams, 40 IDS carburettors and SS1 sports exhaust heat exchangers (plus K&N air filters and a new silencer etc). Reputedly developing 140lbft of torque, it is allied to a refurbished four-speed close-ratio gearbox (complete with new clutch). Riding on 6x16 Fuchs alloys shod with Goodyear 205 NCT tyres, the Porsche has also been treated to a rejuvenated four-wheel disc brake system and Koni shock absorbers. Commenting that the car "drives extremely well", the seller goes on to say "it is compliant over bumps and undulations and corners well with very little body roll. The engine pulls smoothly and does not use oil, while the gearbox and clutch behave correctly". Due to its early build date and the age of its major components, the Porsche might well be eligible for various historic racing series including `Masters'. With such activity in mind the car has been inspected by a MSA representative who is understood to have advised that it should qualify for FIA HTP papers subject to a few minor modifications.
