Lot 517: Lancia Aurelia GT 3rd Series Coupe Restoration Project

Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (7 December 2009)

Within weeks of the appearance of the 2-litre Lancia Aurelia B20 coupe in 1951 the model clocked up an astonishing 2nd place overall in the Mille Miglia only minutes behind Villoresi's winning 4.1-litre Ferrari. Competition successes followed thick and fast including numerous class wins, an outright win in the 1952 Targa Florio and 3rd, 5th and 6th overall in the 1952 Mille Miglia. The B20 dubbed by the motoring press "a sprinter in a dinner jacket" became the standard personal transport for many of the leading racing drivers of the period including Ascari, Fangio and Hawthorn. The car's great successes derived from its wonderful balanced handling, light weight and reliability.

Six series of cars were built by Lancia between 1951 and 1958. To the enthusiastic sporting driver the most desirable models were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd series cars with independent rear suspension. The later de Dion sprung cars were heavier, more refined and less entertaining to drive. To many, the 3rd series, which combined the light weight of the early cars with the 2.5-litre version of the V6 engine, was the most desirable of all with a top speed of over 115 mph exceptional for the day.

This late 3rd series car was manufactured in 1953. The car is complete in all major components with its original engine and transmission and has the rare and desirable Nardi floor change. There is a wealth of technical knowledge about these cars in England and in Italy and many of the parts have now been re-manufactured to a high standard. This is an exciting restoration project for an enthusiast wanting a ground up re-build of one of the best and most sporting models of the Aurelia GT.

The car is offered with a current UK registration document, the original buff UK registration book dating back to 1963, and historic period registration number.
