Lot '46: Mitsubishi GTO
Launched in 1990, the GTO was to be the flagship model in the Mitsubishi range for the whole decade and was pitted against equally high-tech rivals like the Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7, Skyline GT-R and Toyota Supra. Badged as the 3000GT in Europe and the Dodge Stealth in America, it incorporated many of Mitsubishi's contemporary performance-enhancing technologies, such as full time four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, active aerodynamics featuring automatically-adjusting front and rear spoilers, an exhaust note that was tunable from the cabin and electronically controlled suspension (ECS).
Aggressively styled, the cars featured pop-up headlights and noticeable 'caps' on the bonnet to accommodate the ECS controllers at the top of the strut turrets. Power came from 3-litre V6 engine with double overhead cams and 24 valves that produced 222bhp and, driving through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, could propel the car to 60 in around six seconds on its way to a top speed of 145mph.
Dating from 1992, this GTO was imported to the UK from Japan in 1998 and has been in the current ownership for the last four years. A manual gearbox model, it has covered 121,000km from new (75,600 miles) and is said to drive very well although the alternator bearing is somewhat noisy. It was treated to a new clutch at the Clutch Clinic in Gloucester less than 1,000 miles ago and was also fully serviced at the same time and fitted with two new tyres. Currently on SORN it is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale. An appropriate MIB registration number is included in the sale while a full black leather interior including seats and door cards is also available by separate negotiation if desired.
