Lot 121: Oldsmobile Super 88 Fiesta Wagon
A few decades ago General Motors had a flare for showmanship. It was not enough to make up a display of some flashy, maybe slightly customised new models for shows in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and a few other major cities. No, GM also assembled its very own show with those attractions, plus a few dream cars to test public reaction, and, like a travelling circus took it on the road. The first extravaganza which came to be known as the 'GM Motorama' was staged in 1949. It was held early in the model year, thus getting a jump on the other shows and resulting in a tremendous publicity advantage for GM. Always opening in New York at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the Motorama attracted not only the automotive press but businesses and news and general interest publications. The Super 88 Fiesta Wagon was first shown at one of these fantastic shows. At a time when the European luxury estate car was not even thought of, the Americans already had a stylish yet practical 5-door estate to complement the Super 88 range, consisting of Sedan, Coupe, Convertible and of course the Fiesta Wagon. Mechanically they were identical and boosted a 371 cubic inch, QuadraJet carburetted, V8 engine producing some 305 SAE Horse power enough to propel this chrome-laden rocket from standstill to 60mph in 9 seconds! This beautiful example comes from a small but well kept collection of American and European classic cars and, having benefitted from some recent expenditure including a fresh service, is described by the vendor as being in excellent condition throughout. Already rare in its native America and much rarer so in Europe, this must be an excellent opportunity for the collector of all things American.
