Lot 208: Volkswagen Porsche 911S Targa

Techno Classica, Coys (2 April 2011)

The Porsche 911S boasted modifications typical of a higher-performance Porsche; a re-profiled cam, larger valves, better porting, higher compression, and larger jets for the Weber carburettors. The result was 30 more bhp, giving a total of 180bhp with improved torque. Naturally, the S also received chassis upgrades to match its extra power. These included a rear anti-roll bar (augmenting the one in front), Koni shocks, ventilated instead of solid-rotor disc brakes all-round and, soon to be a 911 hallmark, pretty, five-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels that cut five pounds from the un-sprung weight at each hub. The S gear ratios were evenly spaced except for the five-speed transmission's overdrive top, which was purposely very high. This gave 100 mph at 4,200 rpm, hardly a strain for the free-revving flat-six. Pulling max rpm in the lower gears netted 0-60 in under 8 seconds, and the standing quarter-mile of under 16 seconds. This mint Porsche 911 S Targa has only had three owners, the last one of which kept it in his collection for 5 years. Originally supplied to France, the car was stored from 1976 until 1996, when it was bought by its second French owner, who had the car totally restored to superb condition. This restoration was finished at the end of 2000; in 2007 the car came back to Germany and into the third owner's collection, consisting only of the very best examples of high end collectors cars. As you would expect, the condition of this now sought-after 911 is still superb. Resplendent in the original Porsche colour of blood-orange, and fitted with Recaro sport seats (Type SC) in black, a Momo steering wheel and Fuchs wheels, the car comes with German historic registration paperwork and a TV. The restoration report (in French) is also available in the car's history file. One of the best 911 S Porsches we have seen for a long time and not to be missed.
