Lot 233: Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

Techno Classica, Coys (2 April 2011)

The Mercedes Benz 300SL is a model that requires little introduction. Whether in closed form, with the instantly recognisable gullwing doors, or in roadster form there is no better way to turn heads and stop traffic. The SL became an instant icon the moment it was launched and demand and values show no signs of abating to this day. The practicality of the Gullwing SL was compromised by its high sills which made entry and exit awkward. The roadster did not share this feature and so is a much more elegant and comfortable proposition as a car for regular use. The 300SL roadster on offer here is amongst the most exceptional examples of the model currently available having had only 3 owners from new including Mr Hyatt Cheek, chairman from 1971 to 1998 of the largest Mercedes-Benz owners club in the world, the Mercedes-Benz club of North America. Mr Cheek, who owned the car for almost 30 years, was also the chairman of the exclusive Gullwing Group which was only open to owners of 300SL Roadsters and Gullwings. Mr Hyatt Cheek was the second owner, purchasing the roadster in 1977 by which time it had covered only around 28,000 miles. In later years he had it repainted in its original silver blue metallic paint by Randy Marshall of 'The Foreign Car Shop' in Dallas, Texas and had the car re-trimmed in burgundy leather by Manuel Trevino, a local interior specialist. The fuel injection pump was rebuilt by the late Bill Machinter of Rockford, Illinois. During 2000 the car was sent to the renowned SL specialist Paul Russell in Boston for mechanical work including repairs to the auxiliary fuel pump and fuel injection pump, replacing rear axle bearings, seals and a boot, replacing tie rods and drag links and repairing the oil radiator. While in his ownership, Mr Cheek covered relatively few miles using it for local shows with the occasional longer trip. In 2006 the SL was sold to noted West Coast collector Brendan Gallagher with only 35,033 miles on the clock that is a mere 7,000 miles in 30 years. Mr Gallagher entrusted the SL to German Car Services of Santa Monica for regular maintenance and used it sparingly covering only around 1,750 miles during his ownership. Always properly maintained, the current condition of the car is testament to the care and attention that has been lavished upon it by its owners. The car is beautifully and distinctively finished in silver blue metallic paintwork with spotless burgundy leather interior and is outstandingly well presented. It is also complete with fitted luggage and an incredibly rare set of original 300SL tools. Now showing only 36,798 miles on the odometer, this stunning roadster is the epitome of style and would be equally at home cruising on the Riviera or sweeping up the Pacific Coast Highway. Please note that this vehicle will attract EU import duty on the purchase price.
