Lot 238: Porsche 959

Techno Classica, Coys (2 April 2011)

Before the Ferrari F40, before the McLaren F1, almost before the term supercar was invented, there was the Porsche 959, an expression of technical competence, research, development and competitiveness that defined the genre and brought a new excitement to automotive development. The Porsche 959's odyssey started in 1983 and involved many pioneering techniques including the moulded fibreglass/Kevlar bodywork and the first production use of du Pont's Kevlar Aramid material. The suspension had three ride height selections in addition to three settings for the shock absorbers, while its antilock braking system was controlled by high speed microprocessors augmented by run-flat Bridgestone tyres. The 2,849cc Porsche twin sequential turbocharged and intercooled flat six cylinder engine ran a maximum of one atmosphere boost and used water cooling for the six individual cylinder heads, producing a totally reliable 450 horsepower at 6,500 rpm (easily boosted to 650bhp) driving through an electronically-controlled all wheel drive system. Performance was 198mph plus top speed and 0-62mph/100kph in a staggering 3.6 seconds...even in the wet. The list of the Porsche 959's achievements could go on and on. It is sufficient to reiterate only that it was a tour de force in any number of areas and was the first of a new breed of ultra high performance supercar. This is a magnificent original Porsche 959 and reputedly having been delivered to H.R.H. the King of Spain when new. The car itself has covered only 47,000 kilometres from new and comes with its service history file and all books and tools with further documentation and history available in the cars file. Finished in a dark shadow of anthracite with a matching original interior in 3 shades of grey; this rare collector's item is now registered in Austria with appropriate paperwork. As we are told by the vendor, the car is accident free and in superb condition in all respects. Truly a collector's item and a highlight in any important Porsche collection; Coys is very pleased to offer this important Porsche which was - and still is - a milestone in the truest sense of Porsche's history. Out of a limited edition of just 250 cars, the 959 is an outstanding car from the most famous of German sports cars manufacturers - Porsche.
