Lot 231: Allard M1 drop head coupe

Classic Cars, Charterhouse (17 April 2011)

SydneyAllard was one of a rare breed; not only was he asuccessful racing driver, he was also a respectedmanufacturer as well. In fact, he won numerousraces in cars of his own design, including the 1952Monte Carlo Rally, in an Allard P1, the 1949British Hill Climb Championship, driving anSteyr-Allard Special, and a plethora of otherevents, both pre and post WWII. The M1,produced between 1947 and 1950, employedFord's robust flat head 3622 cc V8 engine inAllard's trademark chassis incorporating independently suspended split front axle andtransverse-leaf rear end, in a chassis 6 incheslonger that the K-type. The extra length allowedthe insertion of two rear seats. JAO 308 waspurchased from a previous Charterhouse auction in2003, by a well known West Country collector, where it resided in his collection awaiting finalrestoration and assembly. Unfortunately, due tothe collector's demise, the car received no furtherwork. Purchased by the current owner in 2009,the intention was to finish the car and compete intrials events. However, due to other commitments, this hasn't been possible. JAO 308 has benefitedfrom extensive restoration work, including arebuilt engine, chassis, running gear, wiring loom, inner panel work and ash frame. The outer panelshave been hung on the frame and have received acoat of protective green paint. The history filecontains an Allard instruction manual, copies of Allard engineer's reports, assorted photographs of the restoration in progress, invoices and variousroad test reports. With such a lot of the hard work already completed, JAO 308 offers the next owneran exciting opportunity to complete a rare car and join an exclusive club. RF60, no current MOT ortax
