Lot 245: Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

Classic Car Auction, Historics at Brooklands (18 May 2011)

The Alfa Romeo 2600 models, designated 106 series, were first introduced in 1962 in Berlina (saloon), Sprint (coupe) and Spider (convertible) forms. Alfa Romeo only produced 2255 106 series 2600 Spiders between 1962 and 1965. Even rarer are the 102 righthand drive models manufactured in 1964, one of which is offered here today. With elegant coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, the spider body and chassis were those of the earlier 102 series 2000 spider with only minor changes to the body. The addition of a full width bonnet scoop together with distinctive headlight positioning, create a more formidable appearance than the earlier model. Designated a 2+2, the rear seats can be described as occasional, however, long distance high speed cruising was achieved in comfort for two people.

The most significant change was mechanical with the addition of two cylinders and an increased capacity from the 1975cc to 2584cc. The straight in-line six, twin overhead camshaft, engine is fed by triple Solex carburettors giving an advertised 145hp. Against its sisters, the 2600 Berlina and Sprint, the Spider is the lightest of these production models, has the easiest steering and somewhat better acceleration. Coupled to a five speed gearbox, superb ride quality and directional stability, the 2600 Spider is primarily a high speed touring machine.

Imported and sold by the Alfa Romeo Conncessionaires, Thompson and Taylors, this particular car on offer is one family owned from new and comes complete with its factory hardtop and the original tool kit.

A restoration was carried out between 1988 and 1990 with bills totalling in the region of 16,000 backed up by the history file. The restoration included a full mechanical rebuild as well as the Touring coachwork being treated to a full bare metal strip and repaint in ivory.

Today this motor car presents very well indeed. The coachwork looks good from any angle and the interior, also in good order, gives off a welcome feel. The soft top hood works well and folds down below the body line. The rear seat back incorporates the hood bag, so whilst the soft top is folded down the hood assembly is neatly hidden. There is also the additional benefit of the original factory hardtop available with the car.

Once settled into the comfortable driver's seat, the car starts easily and idles smoothly with excellent oil pressure and correct water temperature. On the road the car is reassuring with everything seemingly effortless. The view over the long classic bonnet is inspiring so with an MOT test certificate and road tax until 2012 this Alfa Romeo awaits a lucky new owner who may enjoy that view on the road straightaway.
