Lot 002: Alfa Romeo 164 Super
Launched in 1988, the Alfa Romeo 164 was intended as a serious rival to other sporting saloons from the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Beautifully styled by Pininfarina and luxuriously trimmed inside, it was also exceptionally well made with galvanised body panels that laid to rest once and for all Alfa's previous reputation for rust and reliability issues.
Alfa's first large front-wheel drive car, it was blessed with superb handling that will delight even the most press-on driver. Best of all though, it was powered by what is unquestionably one of the finest engines ever made, Alfa's legendary 3-litre V6. Free-revving, powerful and superbly responsive, it provides such a thrilling sound track that you will never want to put on the radio. Initially with 192bhp, it was upgraded in 1993 to 210bhp 24-valve spec, good for a 0-60 dash of under 8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 149mph.
First registered in May 1993, this particular 24-valve Super has covered some 96,000 miles and has a full service history from new. Last serviced less than 1,000 miles ago, it was also fitted with a new timing belt, tensioner pulley and water pump at the same time. Said to be in very good condition throughout, it comes with many bills, 10 old MOTs and its original handbooks. Its has been laid up in dry storage since 2008 but the vendor, who is currently overseas, hopes to offer it with a fresh MOT by the time of sale.
