Lot 006: VW Golf Drive

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

The Golf was VW's answer to the immortal Beetle, and was their first model not to be overshadowed by the air cooled wonder. To-date nearly 30 million have been made, with well over 1 million finding buyers in the UK. Now on its sixth incarnation it has grown from a small, simple lightweight engineering masterpiece into a large mid-range car. Introduced in 1974, the original was replaced by the Mark 2 in 1983, which soldiered on until it was replaced by the new and much bigger Mark 3 in mid 1991. Such was the cult status of the Golf GTi, that VW decided to offer a less powerful version built to a similar specification. The Driver used the 1.6 litre engine, and was popular with young drivers as whilst it looked every bit like the iconic GTi, it didn't carry the insurance premiums associated with that model.

This automatic 4 door example has clearly been well looked after during its 125,000 miles, and is due to carry a 12 month MOT by the time of sale. Offering great practicality and reliability, this smart Golf Driver would make an ideal second car, or trendy young person's first set of wheels.
