Lot 007: Jaguar XJ40 3.6 Saloon

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Introduced in 1986, the XJ40 range was the most intensively researched car that Jaguar had ever launched and over 200m was invested in its production. Test models clocked up 1.24 million miles in Arizona summer heat testing, 1.1 million miles in Canada winter testing, 1.8 million miles in Australia heat and dust testing, in addition to 750,000 miles on the high-speed Nardo circuit in Italy and other general road tests. All this hard work paid off and the car proved exceptionally reliable in use. A variety of engine sizes were available but amongst the most popular was the 3.6-litre AJ6 unit which produced 221bhp and 240lb/ft of torque with excellent fuel economy. This particular XJ40 3.6 was supplied new by Merritts of Amersham in 1986 and has had just two owners from new. The car is in outstanding original condition throughout and it is hard to believe that it has covered some 80,000 miles in its 25 years to date. The condition of the gleaming white coachwork and pale grey leather interior would not disgrace a car with one tenth of the age and mileage. Clearly a much-loved machine, it is said to drive superbly and comes with a small amount of service history, many old MOTs and two sets of keys. MOTd until May 2012 and taxed until November it is ready for a proud new owner to drive away today. We are great fans of the XJ40 and this fabulous example, in newly fashionable white, looks an absolute steal at the guide price suggested today.
