Lot 023: BMW 316 Baur Cabriolet

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Widely regarded as the best small saloon on the market, the BMW 3-Series has been around since 1975. The second generation of the model was designated the E30 and stayed in production from 1982 until 1994. It came in a variety of engine sizes ranging from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder to a 2.5-litre straight-six, all with rear-wheel drive and superb handling characteristics for the keen driver. BMW did not release a convertible version until 1993 but a factory-approved conversion by Stuttgart coachbuilder Baur was available to special order through the BMW dealerships. This particular Baur Cabriolet was first registered in August 1985 and has covered only 88,000 miles from new in the hands of five owners (the last two owning it for some 10 years apiece). Although BMW badged it as a 316, this car is actually powered by a 1.8-litre engine producing some 90bhp. An exceptionally clean and original example that is said to drive well, it comes with most old MOTs back to 1994 (at 62,925 miles) and apparently has a good service history although this could not be found at the time of cataloguing. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, it should provide many more years of cheap and stylish motoring, particularly on warm sunny days with the hood down.
