Lot 026: Ford Sierra XR4x4

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

To add some much needed sparkle to the Sierra range, Ford added a sports version in 1983, the XR4i. The XR4i used a unique three-door hatch body which featured unusual split side windows and an eye-catching 'Biplane' boot-lid spoiler which was later also to appear on the legendary RS500 Cosworth.

Underneath the XR4i bonnet sat a 160bhp 2.8-litre Cologne V6 which could propel the Sierra to 60mph in just 7.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130mph. In 1985 the XR4i was replaced by the XR4x4, which was based on the five-door hatchback, had four-wheel drive and was initially powered by the same 2.8 V6 engine, although from 1990 it was available with a revised fuel-injected 2.9-litre engine. The Sierra was replaced by the Mondeo range in 1993.

First registered in April 1991, this particular XR4x4 is a real wolf in sheep's clothing. In 2002 the car was sent to Top Boss Performance Tuning in Doncaster to receive a massive dose of steroids that ultimately cost over 11,500.

The full extent of the work is detailed in the history file but highlights include: a fully rebuilt 2.9-litre Cosworth 24v engine chipped and tuned to an estimated 290bhp; twin electric cooling fans; uprated brakes with TVR Griffith calipers at the front and vented discs at the rear; uprated clutch; bespoke stainless steel sports exhaust; vented bonnet; Clifford 600 security system.

Since the work was completed the car has only covered some 500 miles. Needless to say, it is now said to perform very well indeed and is quite capable of embarassing other far more exotic looking vehicles! Currently on SORN but with a full 12 months' MOT, it would make an excellent track day car but is equally at home doing the weekly run to the supermarket where its hatchback practicality really come into its own. A proper Q-car that gives no hint of the beast within, it looks like excellent value at the modest guide price suggested today.
