Lot 033: Audi Quattro Turbo
The Audi Quattro, immortalised by its success on the rally stage in the 1980s, has recently become an icon amongst a new and wider audience thanks to its staring role in TVs cult series Ashes to Ashes. Never a shrinking violet, it caused a sensation when launched at the 1980 Geneva Motorshow and soon became the ultimate thinking man's A to B supercar. Based on an Audi 80 series coupe, it could be easily distinguished by the flared arches and the lovely warble of its straight-five intercooled turbo engine. Producing 197bhp in standard form, with superb road holding, this practical road rocket soon found its way onto the rally field. A change in the rules allowed 4-wheel drive to be used for the first time and Audi were to capitalise on this by winning everything in sight. The first series had a WR code engine of 2,144cc, which was later enlarged to 2,226cc which gave an increase in low down torque if ultimately no more brake horse power.
This 1984 example has had just 3 owners from new, the vendor having known the car since it was just 18 months old and owned it since 1996. He has kept a detailed history file of all of the work undertaken during his period of ownership.
The car was partially stripped and sand blasted underneath. It was then given a thorough coat of Hammerite and regular waxoil treatment. It has not been used in salty weather which shows in the condition of the bodywork. Photos on file show that a small amount of bodywork restoration was done to the wheel arches and the car given a professional re-spray.
The mechanics have been looked after by marque experts Dialynx, and they have fitted new suspension bushes, Koni adjustable dampers and HR springs whilst the brakes have been subtly upgraded with AP 4 pot callipers. This was all deemed necessary as the engine has been rebuilt around a larger capacity MB unit bored out to 2.3 litres and fitted with the original WR head. Competition gaskets, a Dialnyx manifold, Scorpion exhaust and large capacity radiator give an estimated power output of around 300bhp.
A superb interior was sourced from a late model coupe and a new sound system with Blue Tooth has been recently added. The vendor states that it will carry a fresh MOT by the time of sale.
Just 12,452 Audi Quattro Turbos left the production line and it is a rare thing to find one in such good condition. As DCI Gene Hunt would say go on - fire up the Quattro.
