Lot 041: Ferrari john bolton

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

The Ferrari 355 Spyder needs no introduction, and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Ferrari have had more than their fair share of pats on the back. The tradition of creating lookalikes has been around for over a century, and some are definitely more convincing than others. Such is the realism of this one that Ferrari took the manufacturer to court and won a case to have the factory closed down. The roof and cover, badges and emblems are genuine Ferrari items. Unlike the MR2-based bolt on panel kits, this full size body replica was professionally built using a donor 1986 Pontiac Fiero and was used as the demonstration model by the factory in 1999. It has only done 7,600 miles since. The chassis and drive-train were fully reconditioned, including engine, suspension, brakes and gearbox. The 2.8-litre V6 engine has also been uprated with gas-flowed heads and new cams and the vendor reports that it drives very well. The car is fitted with a face-off Sony sound system and CD player. At a fraction of the cost of an original, this car is a real 'head turner' and passers-by would be very hard pushed to spot the difference between this and the real thing!
