Lot 043: MG TF 135 Sunstorm

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

The first all-new car to bear the MG name since the demise of the MGB in 1980, the MG F was launched by the Rover Group in 1995 using the tried-and-tested 1.8-litre K-Series engine which produced 118bhp in standard tune and 145bhp with variable valve control. A proper mid-engined two-seater sports car, it also continued the old BL tradition of Hydragas suspension.

A big step forward came in 2002 when the MG TF was launched, a heavily revised version of the F and named after the classic TF of the 1950s. Much stiffer and more technically advanced than the F, it was a fine handling car with confident road holding and a free-revving 1.8-litre engine. The Hydragas suspension was replaced by a more conventional springs and dampers set up and the car won many fans for its eager and sure-footed nature.

Pick of the range, according to Auto Express, was the TF 135: Our test car was powered by the company's 134bhp 1.8-litre engine. It's far from hi-tech, but the four-cylinder unit delivers a 0-60mph sprint time of 8.2 seconds and rarely feels over-whelmed. Mounted behind the driver's seat, the engine sounds sporty, which adds to the excitement. It's undoubtedly the pick of the range, offering far better value than the 158bhp flagship.

First registered in March 2004, this particular MG TF 135 is a limited edition Sunstorm model, all of which came with hardtops and leather/suede interiors, four pot brake calipers and air conditioning. The car has had just one owner from new and has covered only 30,600 miles with a full service history comprising four stamps to date, the last less than 4,000 miles ago. All servicing has been done by the supplying dealer, Hopton Garage of Stafford.

The car is said to be in excellent condition throughout with an unused mohair hood and comes with its original handbooks, two sets of keys and all its tools. MOTd and taxed until March 2012, this mid-engined funster looks great value at the guide price suggested today.
