Lot 057: Land Rover Lightweight

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

The Series 3 Land Rover was produced from 1971 to 1985 and had many detail improvements over the outgoing S2 model including synchromesh on all four forward gears. It proved very popular with the British Armed Forces and their vehicles often had improved suspension components and a heavier duty chassis. A most successful model was the air-portable Lightweight S3, a stripped out half-ton vehicle on an 88-inch wheelbase.

Dating from November 1974, this particular Lightweight appears to have served with the military until May 1986 when it was demobbed for civilian use. Originally a 2.25-litre petrol model, in 2005 it was fitted with a 1985 Defender 110 2.5-litre diesel engine and a new original equipment cam belt was fitted. It has also been fitted with a new galvanised chassis and an X9 Superwinch with key. With an MOT until February 2012 and various bills for the work done to date, it is ready for immediate use.
