Lot 061: MG RV8

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Introduced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the MGB some 10 years after production of the original had ceased, the RV8 was destined to become a classic from its launch at the 1992 British International Motor Show. The new MG codenamed Adder was developed by the Rover Special Products team at Gaydon and was based on the MGB Heritage bodyshell but with a dose of steroids to pump up the silhouette and a luxurious leather and burr elm interior.

Under the bonnet the RV8 was powered by a 3.9-litre V8 with a modern engine management system and Lucas fuel injection delivering 190bhp through a five speed gearbox and limited slip differential. Performance was suitably authoritative with 0-60mph coming up in just 5.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 135mph. Telescopic dampers replaced the original lever arm units but the faithful live rear axle remained. Costing 26,000 new, only 2,000 were made of which 1,300 went to Japan.

First registered in December 1994, this particular Woodcote Green example was imported from Japan in 2006 by a local garage proprietor with 29,600 km (18,500 miles) on the clock. When the car was imported it was treated to a full service and a new higher capacity radiator; new heavy duty adjustable shock absorbers front and rear; a full brake overall and four new tyres. It was also given a waxoil treatment, two new door veneer cappings were fitted along with a new tonneau cover with a storage bag.

The alloy wheels were refurbished and a new CD player and a luggage rack fitted. A new mph speedo was fitted and the car has now covered some 25,300 miles with supporting MOTs. It has been serviced four times since import, the last less than 100 miles ago. There is no air conditioning as this was removed by the owner.

The car comes with its original Japanese handbooks and service record, has an MOT until February 2012 and is a well-sorted, low mileage MG RV8 that is ready to jump in and enjoy.
