Lot 073: MG B GT

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Introduced in 1965, the Pininfarina styled MGB GT 2+2 was largely based on the convertible, but used a taller windscreen and new roof line. The MGB range was an enormous success and its popularity as an affordable fun car has not diminished. Furthermore its 95bhp B series engine with twin 1 SUs makes for a 105mph top speed. Their reliability, performance and excellent handling mean that there is no reason why they cannot be used every day.

First registered in May 1972, this Teal Blue GT was formerly a company car for a BL manager and was bought by the vendor as a retirement project in 2004. It has since had a full rebuild which included removing all the paint then fitting new front wings and three-part sills on each side. The engine was stripped, bored and rebuilt with new pistons etc. as was the gearbox and overdrive. All running gear, suspension and brakes were renewed as required and alloy wheels fitted along with a new fuel tank, radiator, oil cooler, electronic ignition, halogen headlamps and new batteries.

The interior was retrimmed including new foam and sprung bases for the seats which were reupholstered with leather covers, including the rear seat. A JVC radio/CD was also fitted. The car was then resprayed, stone-chipped and undersealed. It was put back on the road in July 2005 and has since covered under 3,000 dry miles and has always been run with lead replacement additive. Copious amounts of waxoil have been applied over the last few years. It is only reluctantly being sold due to a hip problem which means the vendor can no longer comfortably drive the car.

Taxed and MOTd until June 2012, the car comes with an owner's handbook and a Heritage Certificate. Few cars of this era have anything like the back up and support that exists for MGBs. Although relatively plentiful thanks to the large number built, they should not be underestimated as competent, relatively fast GTs for everyday use.
