Lot 074: Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Introduced in 1985, the Porsche 944 Turbo used a turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard 944 2.5-litre in-line 4 that increased performance to 220bhp and 243lb/ft torque. Together with a host of other revisions, such as improved aerodynamics, a strengthened gearbox, wider wheels and uprated suspension, the new car was capable of 155mph and could sprint to 60 in just 6 seconds. Blessed with superb handling thanks to its perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the car was every bit as fast as the contemporary 911 3.2 and even more expensive at 36,800! Things got better still in 1989 when the Turbo S was launched, now with 250bhp and 260lb/ft of torque and 160mph-plus performance. The suspension was also upgraded to MO30 spec with adjustable Koni shocks all round and stiffer springs and bushes for more precise handling, while the seats gained larger side bolsters to pin the driver in place during enthusiastic cornering. In 1991 Porsche made the Turbo S available as a cabriolet, stating that only 500 would be made. In fact 625 were sold of which just 100 were in right-hand drive for the UK, Japanese, Australian and South African markets. According to howmanyleft.co.uk, just 47 examples are registered in the UK today. First registered in August 1991, this Turbo Cabriolet is one of those extremely rare RHD versions that made it to the UK. It has covered only 60,000 miles from new and comes with a comprehensive service history, the last service being carried out less than 1,000 miles ago. The car has recently been fitted with a Promax Stage 2 performance upgrade which delivers some 300bhp. The vendor states that the bodywork, interior and mechanics are in first class order and believes that it is possibly the best and lowest mileage example currently available. MOTd and taxed until October and due to be driven some 100 miles to the sale, this rare modern classic is worthy of the serious Porsche collector.
