Lot 097: Peugeot 304 Cabriolet

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

The 304 made its debut at the Paris motorshow in 1969 and was to remain in production until 1980 by which time 1.2 million of the chic Pininfarina styled mid size Peugeots had found customers. Using the centre section from the 204, a larger front and rear were grafted on, the front mirroring the styling of the new 504 which had met with such acclaim. Independent suspension all round ensured that the astonishing ride quality associated with all Peugeots produced post war was maintained, whilst front disc brakes added a touch of technology to an otherwise fairly conventional layout. The 1,288cc single overhead cam engine gave the 304 a respectable performance thanks to its light weight all adding up to a very stylish and comfortable small car with an immense Gallic charm. A wide range of body styles were available including a lovely coupe and cabriolet. This 1972 cabriolet has been known to the vendor for over 30 years and he believes the 88,000 miles showing on the odometer to be genuine. In remarkably original condition, it drives very sweetly as was demonstrated during the catalogue photography and makes for a very different alternative to the normal crop of cabriolets. Complete with spare hood and 13 old MOTs, it is due to carry a fresh MOT by the time of the sale. Altogether a nice original example of this rare and charming car.
