Lot 100: Hillman Minx Phase V Convertible
Hillman launched its first Minx way back in 1932 and a model with that name was to remain in production right up until 1970. Between 1945 and 1957 the Minx developed through eight phases, the big change coming with the Phase III model of 1948 which was heavily influenced by a new Trans-Atlantic style being pioneered by Raymond Loewy in America. A total break from Hillman's conservative pre-war styling ethic, the new Minx was much more sleek and streamlined to tempt buyers both at home and in the vital export markets.
Saloon, estate and convertible versions were available, the Phase V models being powered by an improved 1,265cc sidevalve engine that produced 38bhp driving through a 4-speed column change gearbox. A saloon tested by 'The Motor' had a top speed of 67mph and could accelerate from 0-60 in 39.7 seconds. A fuel consumption of 32.1mpg was recorded. Some 59,777 Phase V Minxes were produced during the 16 months the model lasted, yet today survivors are few and far between, especially in desirable convertible form, as here.
First registered in Flintshire in January 1953, this particular Convertible appears to be in very nice condition throughout with a lovely original interior. The car was treated to a bare metal repaint in 1990 and has since won several trophies at various shows. A new clutch was fitted last year and it has also just had a full brake overhaul. The hood is original and serviceable and still retains the correct glass rear window but is now showing signs of age.
Said to drive very well, it is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale. It comes with various bills for work carried out to date, the aforementioned trophies, an Autocar road test from when it was new and a lovely period sales brochure that shows an identical car. Altogether a charming old motorcar that has clearly been well looked after and is mellowing nicely.
