Lot 105: Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (964) Targa
By 1989 Porsche knew that they needed to give the mainstay of their range, the 911, something new to keep on top of the competition. The new incarnation was internally coded 964 and according to the press information at the time was a very precise 87% new.
The new model' s wow factor took the form of the Carrera 4 which used the 4 wheel drive system from the 953 Paris Dakar race cars. This put to bed once and for all any possible criticism of the rear engined handling traits of the previous models. The 964 carried the car through to the last model of air cooled 911, the 993 launched in 1993. The engine was increased in size to 3.6 litres, now pumping out 250bhp at 6100rpm. Torque was up too and the high compression engine now boasted two plugs per cylinder, a feature which allowed the ignition to be slightly retarded so it would still run on regular 95 octane petrol.
This 1989 Carrera 4 has covered some 127,000 miles and is described by the vendor as in sound all round condition, having had lots of money spent on it over the last few years including a new clutch, starter and tyres. It does however require some attention to the bodywork and the rear windscreen wiper is missing. This is an ideal candidate to use and improve and is MOT'd until June 2012. It looks excellent value at the guide price suggested today.
