Lot 110: BMW Z3M Roadster

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (13 July 2011)

Although the Z3 was a fine car in many ways, it was always somewhat sniffed at by true petrolheads for being a bit of a posers car that lacked the go to match the show. All that changed in 1998 when BMW management handed it over to their Motorsports division for a serious dose of steroids.

They installed the magnificent 321bhp 3.2-litre straight-six engine from the contemporary E36 M3 Coupe, along with that car's beefed up suspension, brakes and six-speed manual gearbox. The package was topped off with massive alloy wheels, quad exhausts and a more aggressive front spoiler and sideskirts. There were also interior upgrades with additional gauges in the centre console, lighted 'M' gear knob, various chrome bits throughout the cockpit and two-tone leather sport seats as standard equipment.

The result was a proper hooligan sports car that could scorch to 60mph in 5.2 seconds on its way to a top speed limited to 155mph. It remained in production until 2002 when it was replaced by the Z4.

First registered in April 1998, this particular car comes in the best colour combination of Estoril Blue with a two-tone blue hide interior. It has covered some 78,000 miles from new with no fewer than 14 service stamps to date, the last at 74,823 miles. This car was bought by the current vendor in March 2009 as a 70th birthday present for his mother. Perhaps understandably, she wasn't too impressed with this idea and has only clocked up 1,000 miles in the car in the last two years. "Although it is quite happy to pootle around, it is a bit too alarming when you prod it," the lady told your cataloguer.

She has now decided that it is perhaps time to slow down a little and get something a little less lairy instead. The car comes with all its original handbooks, the aforementioned service history, various supporting bills and two sets of keys. Taxed until October and MOTd until May 2012, it is ready for a more enthusiastic owner to drive away today.
