Lot 247: Bentley Turbo R

Classic Car Auction, Historics at Brooklands (19 July 2011)

The Bentley Turbo R was a high-performance model produced by Bentley Motors Limited. It initially inherited the turbocharged engine from the Mulsanne Turbo and also sported a retuned suspension and wider tires on alloy wheels, quite a departure for a Bentley. From the 1987 model year, however, the Turbo R's V8 engine was re-tuned with new Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection for added torque. Other modifications carried out at the same time included new sports seats and a higher rear axle ratio. Motor Trend called the Turbo R 'the first Bentley in decades deserving of the famous name' in their review of the car on its introduction to the United States in 1989.

The suspension changes, though seemingly subtle, transformed the heavy car into a real performer. Anti-roll bar rates were increased 60% front and 80% rear and tuned dampers were added. A Panhard rod was also introduced, reducing side-to-side movement in corners. Spring rates remained the same as on the Mulsanne. Although official figures were never provided by Rolls-Royce, Motor Trend estimated power output at 296bhp with 486lb/ft of torque. The Turbo R slotted above the Bentley Mulsanne S and Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit and a carved a well deserved niche in the world of performance saloons.

Origianlly delivered to Jack Barclay in London and serviced by them up until 2000 or 42,826 miles. Since then, the comprehensive history file indicates servicing, although un-stamped, by Jack Barclay and then Dutton Forshaw in Kent. It has also recently had the rear discs and pads replaced. The condition both internally and externally appears to be sound throughout with the added benefit of an Alpine cd/radio as we as lamb's wool over rugs front and rear. Supplied with owners manual, service history, and a plethora of bills and invoice as well as a V5C and an MoT test certificate valid until January next year, this fine example of the automotive establishment should prove luxurious and reliable motoring for years to come.
