Lot 252: Jaguar E-Type Series III Convertible

Arizona Biltmore, RM Auctions (19 January 2012)

285 hp, 5,354 cc dual overhead camshaft V-12 engine, four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 105"

" Late model E-Type with a powerful five-liter, 12-cylinder engine " Excellent, low-mileage and original example

Launched in 1961 at the international motor show in Geneva, the E-Type echoed the sensation of the XK120 in an all-new design that Enzo Ferrari called the most beautiful car ever built. An astonishing performance package with amazing speed and handling, the E-Type's brand new four-wheel independent suspension system was so well conceived that Jaguar used it for over 30 years. Arguably the most well recognized sports car of its era, the E-Type had a perfect combination of curvaceous lines, high-performance and affordable price. This winning formula helped establish it as an instant hit, and its popularity has only grown stronger.

The evolution of the E-Type is well documented and concluded in 1971 with a new 5.3-liter 12-cylinder engine. It featured upgraded brakes and standard power steering, and it was available only as a convertible and a 2+2 coupe. The result was a very fine and quite sophisticated grand touring car with great, long-legged power.

This 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III Convertible is an exceptional, original example that was part of a private collection for many years. The V-12 model exudes excellent performance, handling and power while giving the driver an atypically smooth ride with plenty of space and comfortable legroom. It is featured in a striking color combination of red with a tan interior and a black top and boot. This vehicle has been recently serviced and detailed by marque specialist Classic Showcase to flaunt the excellent patina. Additional factory features include a four-speed manual transmission, A/C, wire wheels and the original British Leyland AM/FM radio.

It is difficult to find original and unmolested vehicles such as this that have been well maintained, serviced and have very low original mileage. Collector cars are only original once, and E-Type enthusiasts will attest to the unmistakable handling and performance feel of an excellent, late E-Type Convertible.
