Lot 202: Mercedes-Benz 300D Limousine

The Monaco Sale, Bonhams (11 May 2012)

One of nine medium-sized saloons sharing the same new W123 body design, the 300D was premiered at the 1975 Geneva Salon. These stylish newcomers incorporated many technological advances, particularly in the method of body construction, which made for a much stronger, crush-resistant 'shell. Heating, ventilation and dashboard instrumentation all benefited from improvements. Mercedes-Benz had pioneered the use of diesel engines in passenger cars and the new 300D capitalised on the success of the superseded 240D 3.0, the first model to use the five-cylinder OM617 unit. A succession of oil price increases had begun to focus buyers' attention on economy rather than solely on performance and these altered priorities were reflected in the success of the 240D 3.0, which had sold 53,000 units in only two years. By way of comparison: the nearest petrol-driven equivalent the 280E consumed fuel at a rate of 12.5 litres/100km (18.75mpg) whereas the 300D saloon had an average fuel consumption of 10.8 litres/100km (21.5 miles per gallon), an improvement of some 14%. Combining Mercedes-Benz's traditional high build quality and class-leading specification, the luxurious 300D would turn out to be an even bigger success than its predecessor, selling in excess of 330,000 units up to 1985. The car offered here is an example of the rare eight-seater limousine version that was introduced in 1979 on a 63cm longer wheelbase. A manual transmission model, the 300D currently displays a total of 198,672 kilometres on the odometer and is described as in generally very good condition, having been restored and mechanically overhauled while retaining its original interior. The car is offered with Italian libretto.
