Lot 336: Lancia Aurelia B20 4th Series

Monaco 2012, RM Auctions (11 May 2012)

118 bhp, 2,451 cc V-6 engine with dual Weber carburettors, four-speed manual transmission, independent sliding pillar front, semi-trailing arm and coil spring rear suspension, and four wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 2,660 mm (104.7") " Landmark GT car; a masterpiece of Italian design " Equipped with desirable Nardi kit The arrival of the B20 GT coupé cemented the achievements of Lancia. The shape, designed by Mario Felice Boano and refined and built by Pinin Farina, became an instant classic for its smooth, clean lines and its competition prowess. In the seven years of production there would be six series of the B20 and their characteristics have been made for particular preferences. With the 4th Series of 1954 came a major revision of the rear end, with a De Dion axle and a lower ratio, as well as larger brakes. The 4th Series cars were also the first to offer a left-hand-drive option, as all previous Lancias had been right-hand-drive only. The example offered here is one of the 4th Series cars, considered by most to be the ultimate B20 GT, with a combination of the earlier models' lightness and the increased power and improved suspension of the later models. It was completed on 16th June 1954 and first registered in Italy on 5th July. From the early 1970s, it was owned by a Mr Jean Pierre Cornu in Cannes, France and was imported into the Netherlands about 24 years ago. In 1989, it was purchased by a collector who discovered the car in a barn and carried out a complete restoration, finishing the Aurelia in the distinctive 'Blu Mediterraneo' paint it now wears. Fitted with the desirable Nardi twin carburettor and alloy airbox, as well as floor shift, it is also said to be equipped with a Nardi sports camshaft, high-compression pistons, balanced crankshaft, lightened flywheel and heavy duty valve springs. The hood with scoop is correct for Nardi-equipped cars, and we understand that when Mr Cornu owned this car in the 1970s, all the Nardi fittings were present. The present owner purchased the B20 in 2010 and has since spent £11,000 on maintenance and servicing to keep the car ready for use. A prime candidate for vintage rally and tour events, including the Mille Miglia Storica, this Lancia Aurelia will be a pleasure to drive and comfortable and capable in equal measure.
