Lot 003: Wolseley Hornet MkII

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

The Elf and Hornet were launched as up-market versions versions of the iconic Mini. Based on a standard shell, the bodies were actually built by Fisher & Ludlow using extra length rear wings and a conventional boot, different bonnets and front panels. The Riley version offered better performance, whilst the slightly cheaper Wolseley used a single carburettor engine and a simpler dashboard. By 1963 the Hornet MkII appeared with a 38bhp engine, sufficient to propel the 630kg featherweight to 77mph. Using the Mini's 'magic wand' gearbox, synchromesh was to be found only on the upper three ratios. The arrival of the MkIII in 1966 saw the disappearance of the exterior door hinges, whilst disc brakes and the fully synchro box were added to the specification. The vendor believes that this 1965 MkII has had just one previous family owner from new. They purchased it through Kennings in Doncaster, trading in their 7,000 mile Mini, the invoice coming to 609 less 299 for the part exchange. The service book comes in the original Wolseley 'home market' brown envelope and is accompanied by a very rare original Hornet accessory leaflet, handbook and supplement. The records show that by 1970 it had covered 8,133 miles and that it was last MOTd in 1986 by which time it was still only showing 15,754 miles on the odometer. Shortly after, with a total of 16,440 miles under its belt, it was put into dry storage from where it has been recently unearthed. The car looks to be sound, the vendor hoping to have it running in time for the sale. The bumpers will need re-chroming and whilst in storage several dents have appeared in the roof. The interior is lovely, including the headlining, whilst the footwells appeared like new when the front carpets were lifted. To keep and re-commission as a wonderfully original example of a low mileage Hornet, or as a straightforward restoration to show standard, this small luxury mini will reward its new owner thanks to its hitherto easy life and its originality.
