Lot 009: Austin-Healey Sprite Mk II

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Following on from the enormous success of the Frogeye, Austin-Healey launched a modernised MkII version of the Sprite in 1961. This used the same 948cc engine but with larger twin 1.25-inch SU carburettors increasing power to 46bhp and allied to a close-ratio gearbox. The bodywork was completely revamped with the headlights migrating to a more conventional position in the wings, either side of a full-width grille. At the rear, styling borrowed from the soon-to-be-announced MGB gave a similarly more modern look with the added advantages of an opening boot lid and conventional rear bumper bar. The result was a much less eccentric-looking sports car which, in contemporary road tests, could reach 86mph with a fuel consumption of just 44mpg. Some 31,665 examples were built before it was replaced by the slightly larger-engined MkIII in 1964. This nice, useable 1962 model was purchased by the vendor in 2005. He undertook a restoration project which saw the replacement of the floor pans and sills using either whole new panels, or proper repair sections. There are no patches to the bodywork. At the time he fitted a bored-out engine to 1340cc, a Peter Burgess fast road gas-flowed head with unleaded vales and a taller 3.7:1 final drive. A disc brake conversion has also been fitted to bring the beast to a halt. Back on the road in May 2007, it has been regularly used since, reliably completing a run to Le Mans a few years back. The accompanying Heritage Certificate shows that it was originally painted red, however when it came to repainting it the vendor's wife chose Austin Healey Highway Yellow. It comes with a large file of invoices and is MOTd until August 2012 and taxed until next January. The vendor reports that it runs and drives very well indeed and is for sale solely to make space for the restoration of his Frogeye that is waiting in the wings. CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: Vendor states "Engine number on the V5 and in the catalogue is different to the one on the engine itself".
